Zellij (or zellige) is a form of traditional Moroccan mosaic tilework, known for its intricate geometric patterns and vibrant colours. Made from individually hand-cut glazed terracotta tiles, zellij is carefully arranged to create elaborate designs that decorate walls, floors, fountains, and even ceilings. This ancient art form dates back to at least the 10th century and flourished under the Almohad and Marinid dynasties, becoming a defining feature of Islamic architecture in Morocco. The patterns, often based on mathematical principles, reflect Islamic artistic traditions, avoiding figurative images while embracing complex geometric and floral motifs. The creation of zellij is an incredibly detailed and skilled process. Artisans, known as maalems, shape and chisel each tile by hand before assembling them into breathtaking designs. The most common colours used are blue, green, white, yellow, and brown, often set against a neutral background. Zellij is a hallmark of Moroccan palaces, madrasas (Islamic schools), mosques, and riads, adding a sense of elegance and sophistication.
