Albert Bierstadt’s Mount Vesuvius at Midnight (1868) is a striking oil on canvas painting that vividly captures the fiery eruption of Mount Vesuvius under the cover of night. Created shortly after Bierstadt learned of the volcano’s eruption while living in London, he travelled to Italy to witness and portray this awe-inspiring natural event. The painting presents a powerful scene of glowing lava and ash illuminating the dark sky, contrasted with the silvery moonlight, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. This smaller version (42.6 x 60.7 cm) of a now-lost larger canvas is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s collection, gifted by the Mather family in 1949.
