The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang was a long-range single-seat World War II fighter aircraft. It's predecessor, the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as the "Jug," was the biggest, heaviest, and most expensive fighter aircraft in history to be powered by a single reciprocating engine. The Mustang was 3 tons lighter at takeoff and had twice the range in combat miles. Both aircraft served important roles during WWII.
