NATIONAL AWARD OF THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL JUNE, 2012 In the year 2012, the legendary WWII Montford Point Marines made national headlines on all major news outlets as they became proud recipients of the Congressional Gold Medal passed into law S.1527, signed by President Barack Obama and the 112th U.S Congress.  The 35th Commandant of the Marines Corps General James F. Amos, members of the National black Caucus, and political activist such as Congresswoman Corine Brown (D) Florida, and State Senator Tony Hill (D) Florida,  helped spearhead the initiative to make the award of the Congressional Gold Medal a reality. Speaker of the House John Boehner and Nancy Pelosi presented the award at the U.S. Capitol followed by a ceremony for 574 Montford Point heroes at the Marine Corps Barracks, 8th & I St.in Washington, D.C.
