Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century historicist palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and in honour of Richard Wagner. It is the most photographed building in Germany, and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe, particularly stunning in winter when the entire landscape is covered in snow. Built in the Romanesque Revival style, the castle’s architecture is often described as a “fairytale,” directly inspiring the iconic castles of Disney's Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. In winter, its white limestone walls and dark grey roofs provide a striking contrast against the snow-laden trees of the surrounding Bavarian Alps, a scene often captured in photographs and illustrations.
