My grandmother was one of the first women to graduate from Kalamazoo College with a Business degree instead of her Secretarial Certificate in the 1920s. She bought and sold real estate during the Great Depression and she and my Papa started The Beacon Club which is still around today. She was a powerful, strong woman who didn't love the way she looked but had an amazing sense of style. Her wit and charm were her weapons...and whenever anyone asked her how a woman could be so successful (which, of course, she thought was so patronising), she'd always say with a little smirk "I never leave the house without my lips."
