Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks its pancreas, destroying the insulin-producing beta cells. If the patient is treated immediately with insulin either by injection and/or pump, there is a chance that the remaining beta cells may be able to function and make small amounts of insulin. However, with T1d, this timeframe known as the "Honeymoon Period" may last weeks, months or even surpass a year varying from person to person.
