The North Star was a steam yacht built in 1852 for Cornelius Vanderbilt, who was the richest man in the United States at the time. The original North Star was a 270-foot, 2,500-tonne side-wheeled paddle boat. When it left New York in 1863, the North Star carried 925 travelers plus officers and crew, for a total of about 1,200 passengers.
