Trollstigen, or the “Troll’s Path,” is one of Norway’s most breathtaking and iconic mountain roads, offering a thrilling journey through the dramatic landscapes of the western fjords. Located in the Rauma Municipality, this winding road is part of Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger–Trollstigen, a famous tourist route known for its hairpin turns and jaw-dropping viewpoints. Opened in 1936 after years of challenging construction, Trollstigen features 11 steep hairpin bends as it snakes up the mountainside, with an impressive incline of 10%. The road is surrounded by towering peaks, including Kongen (The King), Dronningen (The Queen), and Bispen (The Bishop), which add to the mythical and rugged beauty of the landscape. At the top of Trollstigen, a modern visitor centre offers panoramic viewpoints with glass walkways extending over the edge, providing stunning views of the valley and the powerful Stigfossen waterfall, which cascades down 320 metres alongside the road. The route is typically open from late spring to early autumn, as winter conditions make it too dangerous for travel.
