Ogallala was once the 'Cowboy Capital' and the end of the dusty Texas Trail. Today, it is best known for its proximity to Lake McConaughy, the largest lake in the state, offering white sand beaches in the middle of the plains.
From the highway, the town presents a classic Western horizon. The landscape is a mix of high prairie and the hints of the rugged canyons that lead towards the reservoir, with the town itself acting as a gateway to the water.
