Old City (Jugol) Ethiopia Postcard

Harar Jugol, the historic fortified town in eastern Ethiopia, is a rare and mesmerising labyrinth of narrow alleys, vibrant cultural heritage, and deep spiritual significance. Encircled by thick 16th-century stone walls built to protect the city from historical conflicts, this UNESCO World Heritage site stands as a living museum of Islamic architecture and culture. The old city is home to over 80 mosques and hundreds of traditional Harari houses, chraacterised by their unique interior layouts, bright textiles, and decorative niches that reflect the town's centuries-old trading history. The atmosphere within Jugol is a sensory explosion of colour and community life. The walls of the dwellings are famously painted in brilliant hues of cobalt blue, deep magenta, and emerald green, contrasting beautifully with the whitewashed plaster and weathered wooden doorways. As shadows lengthen along the cobblestone pathways, women dressed in intricately patterned, colourful flowing garments navigate the markets, filling the air with the scents of fresh coffee, frankincense, and rich spices. It is a place where ancient traditions remain seamlessly integrated into daily life.
