Old Factory Machinery Gears Wheels Vieux Hull Postcard

An old piece of machinery from the EB Eddy Company. The building in the background, with dormer, rusty tin roof, is part of the heritage EB Eddy complex in Gatineau, Québec, Canada. The industry was incorporated in 1886 as The E. B. Eddy Manufacturing Company. Its founder, Ezra Bulter Eddy, had begun business in 1854 making and selling wooden matches out of his home in Hull Quebec. <br> <br> The EB Eddy Manufacturing Company expanded into pulp and paper as the timber trade boomed. In 1891, it was renamed E. B. Eddy Company. In 1900, a disastrous fire raged through Hull, destroying much of the town and many old buildings. Despite severe losses the residents rallied to rebuild. Because of the fire, much of Hull was rebuilt around the turn of the 20th century. Through the decades the company was acquired by more than one corporation, and finally Domtar bought it in 1998. Hull has since been amalgated with surrounding communities Gatineau and Aylmer, however the old part of Hull, or Vieux Hull, especially the area on the island, which was originally occupied by settlers, factory workers and management. Vieux Hull presents a fascinating history, unique architecture and culture. <br> <br> Buildings continue to undergo renovations, as the preservation of unique heritage plays a balancing game with the insistent call of progress.
