This beautiful astronomy photograph from the European Southern Observatory shows the Omega Nebula, which is also known as Messier 17 or NGC 6618. The image dates from 2009, and was taken with the New Technology Telescope at the La Silla Observatory. It has pretty blue, purple, orange and pink tones, with sparkling stars in the background. The image has been subtly edited to enhance the colours and other elements.
