Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani school girl and education activist from the Swat District of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Her activism for rights to education and for women attracted the attention of the who had at times banned girls from attending school. On 9 October 2012, Malala was shot in the head and neck in an assassination attempt by gunmen while returning home on a school bus. On 12 October, a group of 50 Islamic clerics in Pakistan issued a fatwā against those who tried to kill her, but the reiterated its intent to kill Malala and her father. Malala recovered and just nine months later, she delivered these words in an address to the United Nations on 12 July 2013, the date of her 16th birthday and "Malala Day" at the UN.
