"Oneonta Tunnel, Columbia River Gorge Highway, Oregon" by Catherine Sherman. The Oneonta Tunnel was built for cars travelling along the Historic Columbia River Highway in 1914. It closed in 1948 and stayed closed for over half a century, until it was re-opened in 2009. The re-opened tunnel was only open to pedestrians and cyclists on the Historic Columbia River Gorge State Trail. It was destroyed just a few weeks after this photograph was taken by the Eagle Creek Fire in the first week of September 2017. The Historic Columbia River Gorge Highway and Scenic Byway is America's first scenic highway and is a National Historic Landmark. It's 70 miles (113 Kilometres) long. There are many scenic waterfalls along the route, including 620-foot Multnomah Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in the United States. The gorge was carved by cataclysmic floods about 14,000 years ago.
