Owl at Nisqually Card

This Great Horned Owl has his eye on you! He was sleeping, and his eyes are just peeping above his wing, turned over his back to glare at the photographer. He is seated on a moss covered branch, high above the forest path in Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge near Olympia, WA. Against a blurred green background of maple leaves, his (or her?) grey-brown barred feathers blend in naturally. Above the eyes, the feathered "horns" stick up at a slant, like the ears of an irritated cat. A small green fern peeks into view at the left of the image. Copyright Gail Storrs 2010.
