It is a medium sized fish of the family Serrasalmidae. It is native the Amazon River basin, as well as, the north and the eastern Guiana Shield Rivers in South America. During the rainy season when growth is maximal, it feeds on fruits and consumes the seeds of palm trees and other plants. It can grow to a length of 40.7 cm (16.0 in) and has a maximum weight of 5kg (11 lbs).
