Pale Roses - Postcard

Abbott Handerson Thayer, 1849 -1921, was an American artist, naturalist, and teacher. As a painter of portraits, figures, animals and landscapes, he enjoyed a certain prominence during his lifetime, as shown by the fact that his paintings are in the most important U.S. art collections. He is largely known as a painter of “ideal figures,” in which he portrayed women as embodiments of virtue, adorned in flowing white tunics and equipped with feathered angel’s wings. The few surviving examples of Abbott Thayer's still lifes display a thorough knowledge of French impressionism, as well as a remarkable ability to describe the essentials of a flower. The still lifes are quickly and easily painted, unlike the figure paintings that took years to complete. Beautiful painting of pale pink and white roses in a pottery vase set against a background of cream and beige. The background is very much a part of the painting as a whole because its depth colour and distinct brushstrokes.
