Parkee Squirrel, Unalaska Island Postcard

Parkee squirrels were brought to Unalaska Island by the Russians as a food source for the foxes imported for their fur trade industry. The squirrels hibernate in winter and feed on roots, tubers and bulbs in summer. They are a road hazard around Dutch Harbour and Unalaska, Alaska. People suddenly brake or swerve to avoid hitting the rodents, which sometimes seem suicidal in their timing when they cross a road.
