House in Provence (Maison devant la Sainte-Victoire près de Gardanne), painted between 1886 and 1890 in oil on canvas by French Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. The painting shows a solitary farmhouse in the Provençal countryside near Gardanne, with Mont Sainte-Victoire in the distance. Cézanne contrasts the solid form of the house with the surrounding landscape and the blue mountain beyond. The motif was later identified as a house in the Quartier des Fabriques near Gardanne, with Sainte-Victoire seen from La Barque. An early Vollard register describes the scene more specifically as green foreground crossed by a road, a house with a red roof, and the blue mountain farther away. This landscape belongs to Cézanne's sustained exploration of the countryside around Aix-en-Provence and the mountain that became one of his most characteristic subjects.
