Paul Cezanne - Pine tree at L'Estaque Postcard

Pine Tree at L'Estaque / Landscape with Red Roof (Le Pin à l'Estaque), painted in L'Estaque between 1875 and 1876 in oil on canvas by French Post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. A large pine dominates the foreground, its trunk and branches framing a pale house and red roof within the Mediterranean landscape. Cézanne uses the tree as a strong vertical anchor while the building and distant space are simplified into broad areas of colour. The composition belongs to his early visits to L'Estaque, where steep slopes and clustered houses gave him new ways to organise depth. The repeated contrast of pine, architecture and bright southern light would remain important in his later views of the area. The unusual vertical format, foreground tree trunk and low wall reflect the influence of Camille Pissarro after Cézanne’s stays at Pontoise and Auvers. The leaning trunk directs the eye towards the centre of the composition, while the thick, differentiated brushstrokes already emphasize the material weight of forms. The painting was shown in Cézanne’s celebrated 1904 Salon d’Automne retrospective, an exhibition important to the emergence of Fauvism and later Cubism.
