Ia Orana Maria / Hail Mary (We Hail Thee Mary), painted by Paul Gauguin in 1891 during his first stay in Tahiti, reimagines the Christian Annunciation and Madonna and Child in a Tahitian setting. The Virgin Mary carries the child Jesus on her shoulder, both with halos, while a yellow-winged angel reveals them to two Tahitian women; tropical fruit and flowering vegetation enrich the sacred scene. This oil on canvas is held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
