Paul Helleu Sketching with His Wife (1889) by John Singer Sargent is a vintage Victorian fine art "en plein air" portrait painting. Paul César Helleu (a French painter) is drawing while sitting next to his wife and a canoe on a river bank. Both the man and woman are wearing hats which makes it hard to see their faces.
About the artist:
John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) was the most successful portrait painter of his era. Sargent is usually not thought of as an Impressionism painter, but he sometimes used impressionistic techniques to great effect with his own version of the impressionist style.
