The emperor Publius Helvius Pertinax, who reigned between 393-4 C.E., was an anachronism for his time, having sought to bring back Republican virtues to Rome. His intentions were noble, but he was swiftly cut down by his own Praetorian Guard--those who cared more for their own pence than for the good of the Empire.
