Piazza del Popolo - Rome, Italy Postcard

This postcard features Piazza del Popolo in Rome, a broad urban space organised around the ancient Flaminian Obelisk and framed by churches and historic façades. The red-granite obelisk was created in Egypt under Seti I and Ramesses II and was brought to Rome by Augustus before being moved to the piazza in 1589. Its present setting reflects centuries of redesign at the northern gateway to the city, culminating in Giuseppe Valadier’s nineteenth-century reshaping of the square.
