Dance in the City (Danse à la ville), 1883 - Pierre-Auguste Renoir, oil on canvas. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841 - Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919) was a French Impressionist painter. Renoir conceived it as a pendant to Dance in the Country, two large canvases painted in his Paris studio and shown together in March 1883. Suzanne Valadon posed for the woman, and the man is generally identified as his friend Paul Lhote. The city couple is formal and elegant, deliberately contrasting with the warmer country scene. Renoir had recently returned from Italy, where Renaissance art strengthened his interest in drawing. The paired dances record an important transition towards firmer, more clearly defined figures.
