Pierre-Auguste Renoir - The Umbrellas Square Wall Clock

The Umbrellas (Les Parapluies), around 1881-1886 - Pierre-Auguste Renoir, oil on canvas. Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Limoges, 1841 - Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1919) was a French Impressionist painter. Renoir worked on this Paris street scene in two stages separated by about four years, which shows the change in his art during the 1880s. The group on the right, with a mother, her two daughters and a woman in profile, is painted in a light, feathery Impressionist manner. The figures on the left, completed in the second stage, have clearly defined outlines and a stronger sense of volume; X-rays show they were first painted like the rest. A canopy of at least a dozen umbrellas fills the top of the canvas. It was the last of his large vertical paintings of modern life.
