Pollice Verso was an 1872 oil on canvas by the French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme. Pollice Verso is Latin for, “with a turned thumb” and refers to the gesture given to a winning gladiator. If it’s thumbs up the defeated participant is allowed to live. Thumbs down he dies. It was this painting that persuaded director Ridley Scott to make the film Gladiator.
