Portland from the air, circa early 1960s. The new Tukey's Bridge and the East Deering Bypass can be seen in the distance, built in 1960, connecting to Marginal Way, first dreamed up in the 1850s. The Falmouth Hotel and US Post Office still stand on Middle Street, torn down in 1964 and 1965, respectively. The former Curtis chewing gum factory, now Hub Furniture, stands alone in a sea of grass on Fore Street after the destruction of the Vine-Deer-Chatham "Slum Clearance Authority" project. The blackened Long Wharf to the right was Pocahontas Coal Co, burned in the 1950s; formerly Sargent-Dennison, now the location of Dimillo's Restaurant.
