Portrait of a Lady with a Unicorn (by Raphael) Tile

This design features a painting by Raphael (Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino) (1483–1520). The composition the painting appears to have been inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa". It shows a young woman (perhaps Saint Catherine of Alexandria) wearing a red silk dress; she has a unicorn on her lap and there is a beautiful rural landscape behind her. The unicorn is a legendary creature that was traditionally seen as a symbol of loyalty, fidelity and chastity in mediaeval romance. It has been suggested that the initial sketch of the unicorn was based on that of a small dog. The painting was originally produced around 1505 or 1506, and it is now housed in the Galleria Borghese, Rome, Italy.
