Portrait of Gabrielle Cot by William-Adolphe Bouguereau, oil on canvas 1890, is a painting of a young woman in near three-quarter profile view, her face turning to look with warm amusement at the viewer. Her elegant, brilliant white dress contrasts powerfully with the dark background into which the tones of her dark brown, tied back hair appear to melt. The smoothly modelled features of the subject, detailed realism of her costume, and warmly human sentiment of the portrait epitomise the academic classical art of the late 19th century. Bouguereau idealised his subject while maintaining a very human likeness.
