In Portugal's capital, Lisbon, you can visit Belém Tower - Torre de Belém, a beautiful Portuguese monument and iconic monument of the city. It’s a fortified tower built on the northern bank of the Tagus river. Its original purpose was to be a fort, protecting Lisbon from incoming raids along the Tagus River. For the sailors, it was the starting point for many of the voyages of discovery, the last sight of land. It’s one of the architectural jewels of the reign of King Manuel I. This symbol of Portugal's maritime glory has today become a symbol of the city of Lisbon.
