This image is a detail from Ernst Haeckel's "Trochilidae" ("Hummingbirds"), which is part of his Kunstformen der Natur" ("Art Forms of Nature"). It depicts a variety of colourful hummingbirds. Ernst Haeckel was a German biologist, physician, naturalist and artist 1834-1919. Many detailed plates make up Haeckel's "Kunstformen der Natur," an astonishing combination of art and science. It amazed the public when it was published in 1904 and we continue to learn from it and be astonished by the depth and beauty of this work today.
