In 1930, Oil was discovered in the East Texas area surrounding Kilgore, TX. Just as the Great Depression had all but killed the local economy, the oil discovery set off a boom that began a new era of prosperity and huge growth in the area. Kilgore grew from a town of under 800, to a city of 10,000 almost overnight. This photo was taken right at the beginning of that oil boom in about 1931.
