In Emily Barton's 2016 novel "The Book of Esther," Khazaria--a nation of Turkic warrior Jews who really ruled the Pontic-Caspian Steppe in the first millennium CE--is the last thing standing in Hitler's way as he attempts to conquer Stalingrad in August 1942. In the novel, Esther, a female warrior mounted on mechanical horseback, raises a magical army of golems, kabbalists, karaites, Uyghurs, and outcasts of all kinds to face Hitler's menace. When she wrote the novel, it was an alt-historical Jewish dieselpunk feminist fantasy about the way things might have been.
