About This Design
Psyche in the Temple of Love (by Edward Poynter) Doormat
This design features a painting by the English artist Sir Edward John Poynter (1836–1919), who served as President of the Royal Academy of Arts. It depicts the Greek goddess Psyche, who is associated with the soul. She is also associated with butterflies, hence the white butterfly in this depiction. Psyche here is wearing an orange dress with a low neckline and she has an orange tie in her hair. She appears deep in contemplation as she considers the beauty of the small butterfly that she is enticing with flowers on a branch. Psyche is shown as a beautiful young woman in an elegant and opulent palace with lots of marble and exquisite architecture. The original artwork was painted by Edward Poynter in 1882, and it is now housed in the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, a major city in the North West of England.
