Queensland, Australia Travel Poster (Queensland Government Tourist Bureau, Circa 1935) Australian artist Percy Trompf designed thousands of advertising posters and became well known for his works for the Australian National Travel Association and the Victorian Government Railway. His sunny, playful posters were especially appreciated during the Depression, and gained him international attention in the 1930s. The example of Trompf's work here was created for the Queensland Government Tourist Bureau, boasting that region as "The Tropics at Your Door," with two penguins strolling "off to the north for warmth," suitcases in hand. To the right is a map that begins with the city of Brisbane, the gateway to "The Sunshine Route." The route continues up the coast, through Townsville, the jumping off point to the awe-inspiring Great Barrier Reef. Other noteable destinations include Bundaberg (famous local rum), Whitsunday Islands (impossibly soft white sand beaches), and Cairns (tropical rainforests galore).
