This is the Red-Spotted Purple Admiral butterfly (Limenitis arthemis) native to eastern North America and is a brush-footed butterfly. It is called "purple" but in actuality is very dark blue with striking sky blue patterned patches on the edges of the wings, accented with small spots of orange-red.
