Repro Victorian Malkin Butterflies & Anemones Tile

This is a hand colored tile from the late 19th century. It has soft yellow and blue flowers with green and sepia leaves and details within an intricate and delicate brown border ~ all on a warm ivory background wit a group of blue butterflies adding balance to the composition. One of our favorite Malkin transfer ware tiles from our collection. Transferware tiles were originally produced using a decorative technique that was developed in England in the mid-1700s. Decorative tiles and other items printed using this method more affordable than labor-intensive and more costly hand-painted tiles and they were very popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, which also explains the vast variety of transferware tiles available.
