Robert E. Lee Signed Card 1860 Poster

A classic image from Zazzle's extensive collection of historic American Civil War photographs and lithographs. This commemorative poster print features a reproduction of a signed photographic calling card of General Robert E. Lee, supreme military commander of the Confederacy. Known as cartes de visite, these miniature portraits (~2.5" x 4") were invented in France in the early 1850s. It was common practice before and during the Civil War to acquire such portraits through gift or purchase, mail them to the individuals represented, and hope for their return--signed; taken in 1860.
