Where could a lady go to dine safely without an escort in the 1910s? The Rosemount Grill at 1011 9th Street, of course. Sacramento’s iconic Rosemount was opened in 1915 by Eastern European immigrant Pete Valerio. The following year, when it received its liquor license, it advertised its private dining room for ladies. The restaurant was perhaps best known for its massive catalogue of a menu (23 different salads!). In 1945, the Rosemount, and its fabulous neon sign, moved to Folsom Boulevard. It closed in 1989.
