The Saluki, royal dog of Egypt, is perhaps the oldest known breed of domesticated dog. Earliest known carvings look more like Salukis than any other breed: they have a Greyhound body with feathered ears, tail and legs. Salukis were first brought into England in 1840 and were known as Persian Greyhounds. Having tremendous speed, the Saluki was used by Arabs principally in bringing down the gazelle. In England, the dog was used largely on hares. The Saluki can also be known as Arabian Hound, Tazi, Gazelle Hound, Persian Greyhound and Persian Sighthounds. Soutern Illinois University is the only college in the US to have Saluki as a mascot. Amtrak train serving Illinois is possibly the 1st Amtrak train to be named after a dog. The Saluki is part of the AKC Hound Group.
