Saturn in its Shadow Jigsaw Puzzle

Saturn and its rings are backlit by the Sun in this family portrait captured by the Cassini Orbiter that includes distant Venus, Mars, Earth and Earth’s Moon. Included in the image is a description of the object and instruments used to observe it. Fun Stuff: At first glance you might not notice the many interlopers in this image of Saturn and its rings. Because we are looking back on Saturn from inside its shadow, the Sun is actually near the centre of the image – but behind the planet. And visible only as tiny pinpricks are distant Venus, Mars, Earth, and Earth’s Moon, as well as many of Saturn’s moons, such as Enceladus, a tiny world with active water-ice geysers and Mimas, an even tinier world sporting a large crater that gives it an uncanny resemblance to the Death Star. Technical Stuff: This image, taken on 19 July 2013, is in fact a mosaic of 141 images stitched together. They were captured with one of the Cassini Orbiter’s 12 instruments, the two-camera Imaging Science Subsystem.
