Self-Portrait | Vincent van Gogh Poster

Self-Portrait (1887) by Dutch Post-Impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) is a vivid and expressive portrait created during the artist’s time in Paris, when he was exploring new approaches to colour and brushwork. Shown in three-quarter view, Van Gogh gazes thoughtfully towards the viewer, his reddish-orange beard and golden-brown hair standing out against a richly textured blue-green background. His dark jacket is built from a lively mosaic of short strokes in deep blue, green, orange, and red, creating a striking interplay of complementary colours. Inspired by contemporary Neo-Impressionist techniques, Van Gogh uses individual marks of contrasting colour to give the composition remarkable energy and visual movement. Both intimate and experimental, this self-portrait captures the artist’s evolving style and his growing fascination with the expressive possibilities of colour.
