Shirley Plantation - Great House Photo Print

Shirley Plantation is one of the most enduring landmarks in Virginia. The land was patented by Thomas West 3rd Baron De la Warr in 1613. Originally called West and Sherley Hundred, the lands produced tobacco, and as such became a major prize even before Edward Hill purchased the land in 1638. The Hill family's business continued to grow after 1638. Marriage brought established powerful connections throughout the state especially as Elizabeth Hill married Robert "King" Carter's son, John, in 1723. After the marriage, John initiated construction of the "Great House", which was completed in 1738. His vision remains largely untouched as 11 generations of Hill-Carters have continuously occupied the house and surrounding lands. Today, Shirley Plantation boasts fascinating architecture, enthralling history, and the longest running family owned business in North America, not to mention spectacular views and the odd ghost story or two. It is a Virginian treasure not to be missed.
