Skeleton of Elk Poster

near 200 foot curtain falls. I had this deep canyon to myself to soak all day (only 2 miles from the previous campsite). It was 8 miles and 7 stream crossings away from the ranger station. The last crossing (happily I took hiking poles) was using 2 x 8 inch round logs that had fallen across the river which was 2 feet deep or so (so I did not have to stop and change shoes again). It was about 20 feet across. 1/2 way across I saw a 4 foot high rib sticking out of a carcass and was like crap--I was 1/2 way across and could not turn around without a tumble. So I said "bear" to alert a bear at first quietly but with no response over the river sound, said it a little louder each time. Then phew I noticed there were hardly any flies and that the butt meat looked desicated. The head and antlers were to the left 30 feet. Am guessing it was a wolf kill. Anyway, I needed to relax after that experience! This is another skeleton close to wear I camped. The bear bag pole had 1x1x1cm claw marks all the way up it's 30 foot height even though it was about 8 inches in diameter. I slept with a light on in my tent. The rangers said not to wait if I heard something outside the tent, but rather get up and face it. Happily I did not have to do anything of the sort and actually slept well. It was quite aways down thru springs soaked hillside and mud, and across crossing 8 to get to these springs on the other side at the base of the falls. Cell phone coverage reached however at the top of the hill. Was able to call my fiance and say hi that night. The outhouse looked out over a 6 mile wide valley with the Tetons in the distance. I had clear skies, and got to my car right as a terrific thunderstorm hit in September.
