Sketchy Trees Calendar

The Sketchy Tree ink series was inspired by photos that I took along the trail during my 50 New York Waterfalls Project. During that project I hiked to, photographed, and then later painted 50 different waterfalls within the Finger Lakes Region of New York. While hiking, I was especially intrigued by where the water had washed away the soil from beneath the trees and you could see the exposed root systems underneath. The large drawings of this series all show trees with exposed root systems within them, and several of the drawings show the same scene but from different positions. Each drawing was completed with ink pens. I started with basic outlines and slowly added multiple layers of shading and texture in a loose intuitive way. At the end I added highlights of white and silver.
