The name 'Janome' is derived from a pattern resembling a snake's eye, but it originally referred to a 'tsurumaki' (a coil for storing备用 bowstrings) worn by samurai on their left waist, attached to the waist belt of their 'ebira' (quiver) when wearing armor (according to 'Kamon no Jiten' by Takasawa). The 'tsurumaki' is a leather or bamboo bow accessory used to coil bowstrings, and when worn by samurai in armor, it resembles a snake's eye. Later, due to its resemblance to a snake's eye, it was referred to as the 'Janome' crest (according to 'Nihon no Monsho' edited by Ito Kosaku).
