Snake Tells a Story Coffee Mug

A small number of isolated churches in the United States practice a religious rite called snake handling as part of the Holiness Movement. The practice began in the early 20th century. Those who participate in this rite do so in accordance with the Gospel of Mark, Chapter 16: “Behold I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions . . . and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” While a surprising number of practitioners handle snakes without injury, since 1910 there have been 92 deaths attributed to this activity. In Kentucky snake handling is a misdemeanour and punishable by a $50 to $100 fine. Snake handling is legal in the state of West Virginia.
