Sønderborg Castle Denmark Postcard

Sønderborg Castle is a prominent castle in Sønderborg, Denmark, on the island of Als. Originally built as a fortress in the 12th century, it has seen numerous expansions and renovations over the centuries, transitioning from a mediaeval stronghold into a Renaissance palace and then a Baroque castle. It’s uniquely situated at the entrance to Als Sound, overlooking the harbour and the town. Today, it serves as a museum, showcasing the history of the region of Southern Jutland and the Duchy of Schleswig. The castle is most famously associated with King Christian II of Denmark, who was imprisoned here for 17 years. Its architecture is chraacterised by its imposing size, red brick walls, four distinctive corners, and a beautiful inner courtyard. The surrounding ramparts and the views of the sound make it a picturesque landmark, combining historical significance with architectural charm, and serving as a focal point of Sønderborg's history and cultural life.
